German student admits to piracy and leaking of Merkel's data and public figures
A student admitted to carrying out the largest infiltration and electronic data leakage in the history of Germany, was the victim of politicians, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and journalists.
According to Reuters, "the infiltration caused great embarrassment to the authorities of electronic security in Germany because of the magnitude of electronic crime.
Police did not name the 20-year-old but said he was living with his parents, saying he was not a computer expert.
The young man was arrested after police searched a house in the central German state of Hesse on Sunday evening. Investigators confiscated a computer, the suspect had hidden it two days before the inspection, a copy of the data stored.Nevertheless, the young man managed to sneak into personal data and documents of about 1,000 people, including Merkel, politicians and journalists, and leaked it.
Police released the suspect, who has cooperated with the investigators.
"During the interrogation, the defendant confessed that he was acting alone in relation to spying on and publishing the data without authorization," the Federal Criminal Police Office said in a statement.
